The Lawaetz-Foundation

• Founded in 1986 by the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg in remembrance of Johann Daniel Lawaetz´ starting point of “help to self-help”, the Lawaetz-Foundation is a charitable foundation which enables socially and economically disadvantaged people to have access to the labour-, training- and housing market via innovative methods of mobilizing the potentials of self-organization.
  

 

Guiding Principle

In a word, the Lawaetz-Foundation is: in the public interest.

 

 Our Point of View of the Current Social Conditions

We recognize:

• dynamic radical changes within the labour market (internationalization, tertiarization, deregulation and flexibilization);
  
• increasing social inequality (increasing risks of impoverishment, social splitting within the cities, individualization, break off of social relationships);
  

 

The Aims of the Foundation

• supporting the potentials of self-organization and
• strengthening of socially and economically sustainable development to improve
  
  • the individual living conditions
    
  • the all-urban social and economic procedures and
  • the transnational agreement and the development of projects within this context

 

How productive we are

• We identify, analyse and solve problems by co-operative starting points
  
• We organize solutions of problems by encouraging to self-organize the systems involved
  
• We create the acceptance of solutions of problems within the public communication
  
• We produce knowledge by exchanging opinions and know-how-transfer
  
• We structure information procedures and organize dialogues
  

 

Our main areas of responsibility

• Consultation and evaluation for the European Social Fund (ESF)
  
• Start-up advice
  
• Technical help or support of programs and urban institutions, e.g. the realization of ESF, supporting young people in training, security conference and so on
  
• Conducting user-oriented analyses and expert´s reports
  
• Realization of communication and knowledge transfer (between theory/practice, experts/laymen, regions and so on)
  
• Urban development and organization of social procedures by redevelopment and new building (e.g. within project development and building management)
  
• Neighbourhood development

We work in Networks

• locally in co-operation with local actors
  
• regionally in co-operation with the Hamburg network of founders, the working group of Hamburg redevelopment supporters, the association of North German housing companies
  
• nationally in co-operation with the federal working-groups “BAG-Arbeit” (labour), “BAG-Beratung” (advice) and “BAG-Soziale Stadt” (social town), with the housing association “Wohnbund”, with the working group “ESF-evaluation” etc.
  
• throughout Europe in co-operation with “MetroNet”, the European Network for Local Development and Economic Self-Help and with partner projects, e.g. in Berlin, Dublin, London, Malmö, Newcastle, Rome, Santander and Stockholm.

Vision: Hamburg is a co-operative, socially and economically successful city in Europe

• The Lawaetz-Foundation is a creative organization in Hamburg, and we support this vision to become again and again a communicative and practical reality!

 

 

This model was commonly worked out by the members of our staff in 2002/2003

Within our annual self-evaluation we will reflect on developments and, if necessary, we will modify this model.
